The key to having a glass of wine after a long day of moving is to make sure all your wine makes it to your new home safely. Just like with any other fragile or glass items, a move presents a risk to your wine bottles. Whether you buy $3 Aldi wine or some fancy vintage to keep in your cellar, no one wants to lose a bottle of their favorite wine to poor packing practices (try saying that 10 times fast!) Here are the best ways to pack your bottles of wine to ensure safe travels.
Pro Packing for Perfect Pours
The easiest – and best – way to pack wine bottles is inside a wine box. If you don’t have any lying around the house, that’s fine. Head over to your local winery, liquor store, or grocery store and ask for any extras they might have. These places usually go through a good amount of wine boxes every day, so you’ll be in luck as long as they haven’t recycled them already. These boxes are made with a thick and sturdy cardboard and include dividers to keep the bottles from colliding during travel. Because they are specially made to transport wine bottles, you shouldn’t need to do any extra taping or fortifying other than simply sealing up the box pre-move.
If your local wine vendors don’t have any boxes to give you, it’s time to resort to DIY or call on Shleppers for some boxes. The goal is to recreate a wine box as well as you can. Take a moderate-sized box that is tall enough to hold wine bottles. Fill it with enough wine bottles to take up the majority of space in the box but not so many that the box will break. Next, take some scrap cardboard and cut dividers to go between the bottles for padding. Finally, seal the box up with plenty of tape to prevent the bottles from breaking through the cardboard during the move. When it comes time to move, carry the box from the bottom to better support the weight of the wine.
If you find yourself in a pinch toward the end of your packing process with no space cardboard or boxes left for packing, do the best you can with what you have. Pack the wine bottles in a plastic tote, suitcase, bag, or carrying and use any sort of padding you can find to protect the bottles. You can use old towels, sheets, tarps, clothing, or even tissues and toilet paper if needed to pad the bottles. The key is to avoid the glass bottles from coming into contact with each other in case of a bumpy ride. Once your bottles have made it safely to your new home, pop open a bottle and toast to a successful move.
