After Your NYC Move
You’ve gotten everything out of your old house and into your new one—what comes next? The task list of things to do is probably overwhelming and deciding how to proceed can be a challenge. Before jumping into things, it’s best to think about how to make the most of your time and energy. Here are some suggestions from NYC moving service, Shleppers, on what to do right after moving.
Get Your Utilities Up and Running
If you didn’t turn your utilities on before the move, now is the time to do it. Depending on the weather, you’re going to want to be able to start heating or cooling your home. Unpacking is exhausting, which is why you definitely want to make sure you have running water to stay hydrated. At the end of the busy day, you’re going to want a hot shower. If you really need Wi-Fi or Internet immediately, you can get those set up as well. This probably isn’t a priority though, and it can wait until later if you can go without it for the time being. Do check the electricity though, so you won’t be left in darkness once night falls.
Take Pictures of Your House
If you’ve just bought a home, you can skip this step. If you’re renting, however, you’ll want to make sure you document the condition of the house as soon as you move in. If there are any damages already present, be sure to highlight them so your landlord won’t deduct money from your security deposit once you move out.
Clean Strategically
When it comes to the order of cleaning things, you need to be strategic. Some things like floors are better left alone until after you’ve unpacked everything. So much of the floor will be covered in boxes you won’t be able to clean much of it. Other areas such as cupboards, closets, and shelves should be cleaned before you unpack. For example, the last thing you want to do is unpack everything in the kitchen only to realize the insides of the cupboards are dirty. Then you’ll have to remove everything to clean and put it back again.
Unpack Essentials
Before you start haphazardly unloading your boxes, you should locate items you’ll need right away and set them somewhere you’ll remember. Items like toiletries, bedsheets, chargers, and some food should be prioritized. At the end of the day, you don’t want to be left sleeping on a bare mattress because you couldn’t find your sheets.
Find Out Where and When Trash Gets Collected
When you’re done unpacking, you’re going to have tons of trash. If you live in an apartment building, you need to figure out where to dispose of your trash. If you moved into a house, you need to know on what days the trash is collected so you can set your trash cans out on the curb. The same goes for recycling. In some places recycling is collected weekly, while in others it’s collected less frequently. Try asking neighbors or your landlord about the schedule.
