When Moving with Kids, the Little Things Matter
Moving can be an overwhelming process, especially when you add in your children. Whether moving out of state or just around the block, children typically aren’t thrilled by such an event or by any big changes. They are often being forced to leave their friends, sports teams, neighbors, schools, and so much more. There are many tips and tricks to handling kids throughout a move. Try to dial down the drama and alleviate some of the stress by following these tips for your next move.
Involve your kids in the process! – A lot happens throughout the moving process and it is easy to overlook your kids. Try and involve them throughout the process because it could make a difference in their feelings toward moving. Have them help pick out paint colors, pack their own belongings, narrow down homes, or any small task to make them feel included in the decisions.
Preparing – Prepare the kids for the move by giving them as much information about your new home and neighborhood as possible. Start early and use time as your advantage. Have them help you pack and encourage them to go through any items they no longer want and either sell or throw away.
Check out the Neighborhood – If you are moving close enough, take a day trip and do a tour of the new neighborhood, town, new schools and other facilities that you’ll be using frequently like a gym, park, pool, etc. Visiting the new neighborhood prior to the move may help open their eyes to the advantages of the move.
Make Room Plans – Get your children excited about moving by letting them pick out their rooms and helping them decorate and arrange their room. Look at new beds, themes, different paint colors and more to boost their excitement.
Host a Party! – There is a lot of fear and anxiety behind moving schools, changing neighborhoods, and leaving your friends behind. By hosting a “goodbye” party or a “see you soon” party, your children will get some closure as they leave their friends and old home. Have their friends bring them mementos, pictures, or something else for your kids to remember them by.
Minimize Change – Help ease the transition by trying to minimize the amount of change. Try and uphold any family traditions you did in the old house such as movie night or game nights, stick to routines and try to set up their bedroom furniture or other items in a familiar way.
Pack a Moving Day Bag – Pack all their favorite toys, games, stuffed animals, snacks, etc., in a moving day bag so that your children are not separated from their favorite items. Maybe even surprise them throughout the trip with more of their favorite toys or snacks to keep them excited throughout the move.
