As New York’s top relocation company, we get a lot of questions about the best time to schedule a move. There’s no doubt in our mind: summertime moves are the absolute best. Here’s why:
1) The kids are out of school.
Whether your kids are just starting kindergarten or are getting ready for college, they need stability in their educational environment to do their best. For this reason, many families choose to schedule their local and long distance moves over summer vacation. It’s easier for kids to transition into a new class if they’re starting on Day One with everyone else.
2) The weather is better.
With over 30 years in the moving industry, we’re not going to let a snowstorm slow us down…but the truth is that summertime moves are logistically easier. You never have to worry about icy conditions or if parking areas are plowed out when the summer sun is shining.
3) Real estate market is at its most active.
Summertime is the season to buy and sell a home. If you haven’t found your next address yet and your home sells quicker than you expected, having plentiful inventory on the market makes moving much easier. This is especially true if you’re moving to an area where the winter weather conditions make house-shopping tricky.
4) You have a little extra time to figure out how your new house works.
Arriving in your new place in the summer gives you plenty of time to figure out things like how the furnace works and what the snow removal situation is like before you need that knowledge for real. If you’re moving to a cold climate from a warm one, you can take advantage of this extra time to build your wardrobe appropriately.
5) Discover all the great summertime attractions sooner.
Moving in the summer means all the local fun attractions will be open when you arrive. Partaking in local fairs, festivals, and events is a great way to help your kids become more familiar with their new community – they may even make some friends before school starts!
