Moving is hard, we get it, but it can be much simpler when you plan accordingly. One of the questions we here at Shleppers Moving & Storage always get from DIY Movers is how to pack their fragile belongings before their big move. Items like chemicals, jewelry, and glassware can be tricky to pack the right way – so we’d like to offer some help. Read on for the official Shleppers’ survival guide on the how to pack difficult items for your move:
Liquids + Food
Shampoo, cleaning chemicals, and cooking supplies (such as oil) are among the liquids you will be moving with. These items can easily leak, spill, and shatter if you aren’t careful. For shampoo, unscrewing the lids and lining the opening with plastic wrap (and then re-applying the lid) can keep them from leaking during the move.
For cleaning products, get a tall bin and line up all your supplies side-by-side. Make sure none of them can tip over if the bin is jostled. Cover up the bin, label it “Hazardous Chemicals”, and place it somewhere safe. Kitchen liquids can be packed similarly, in a shorter bin, and perishable foods are best packed in an insulated cooler on the day of your move.
Glass + Pans
Glass is, well… breakable. In order to keep glassware in one piece during your move, some extra precautions will have to be taken. First, we recommend wrapping your glassware in plastic shopping bags*. For vases, place them in a box with cardboard dividers. Wrapped plates can be stacked inside boxes. Just make sure if the box is wiggled that the glass can’t move. This same method can be applied to pots and pans.
*As a matter of fact, we’d like to take this time to recommend that you save all plastic shopping bags and keep them in your house. They are extremely helpful, and can be used a lot for a move. Items like Shoes are a perfect fit for shopping bags!
Clothes + Jewelry
Clothes are actually the easiest item to pack if you follow this tip: keep them on the hangers! Simply wrap your clothes and their hangers in a large garbage bag and you’re done! As for jewelry, if you don’t have a box you keep your items in, egg cartons make a great storage device! Place earrings in each of the egg slots for quick and safe packing.
