How to Pack Clothes: Shleppers’ Best Tips

Tips from the Moving Professionals

Wherever we go, our clothes need to come with us, but packing and transporting clothes is always a big hassle. Leaving clothes on their hangers takes up too much space in a container but removing each item from the hanger takes up time on both the packing and unpacking side of the moving process. There has never been a “correct” way to move clothes, but here are some helpful hacks to make packing and transporting your clothes a little easier next time you take on a move.

Good Old Fashioned Garment Box

Garment boxes (also called wardrobe boxes) have been a blessing to people going through a move since the day they were released. These boxes stand tall and have a hanging rack, allowing you to simply transfer your hanging clothes from closet to box without fear of broken hangers or smashed clothes. What’s even better about the already great garment box is it is tall enough that you can store shoes in the bottom of the box as well.

No access to a garment box? No problem! Try out the old trick of bagging your hanged clothes in a garbage bag. It can sometimes be a two-person job to wrap the bag around the clothes, but this method also allows for your best dresses and shirts to stay on the hanger, saving you lots of time on both ends.

Take Advantage of Drawers

One thing that many movers never think about utilizing, is storage spaces like dresser drawers or suitcases. These things need to come along in the move, so why not stock them up with clothes? If your dresses need to be moved and your clothes need to be moved, don’t even bother taking the clothes out and packing them up, just move the dresser as is. And don’t forget to stuff your suitcases! These helpful packing bags aren’t just good for holding your clothes on the way to a tropical vacation, they can also help move your clothes from one home to another. Rolling your clothes around in a bag with wheels totally beats carrying a heavy box.

Grab the Vacuum

Last but certainly not least, don’t be afraid to vacuum seal some of your clothes. A huge part of the problem with packing clothes for a move is they take up so much space! A big box fills up fast when it’s packed to the brim with sweaters and jackets. To save space, use vacuum seal bags to flatten out packed clothes and watch your moving boxes fit so much more! This method is also helpful for packing clothes you aren’t planning to unpack right away, as the seal provides a barrier against moisture, dirt, and pests.
