Prepare your Belongings for Packing

The most challenging part of any undertaking is often just getting started. When moving, you can avoid procrastination and stay organized during a crazy, chaotic time by planning what to pack first.

Take Inventory of Your Belongings

Before you even think about beginning to pack, you should first take inventory of your belongings and sort everything. Before beginning to pack, you should know everything that’s in your possession. This is so important.  Grab yourself and notebook, pencil, and a cup of coffee and do a walk through your house.

Purge the Items That You Won’t Be Bringing

For real, get rid of the items you don’t need.  Why go through the trouble of packing countless things that you won’t need or use at your future home?  Rather than spending all that time cleaning, packing, and unpacking these items, find them a better home where they will be used to their potential.

TIP: Purge responsibly. Sort your items into categories like give away, sell, and donate.

You don’t want to be unpacking dirty, dusty items on the other side of your move, so a quick way to prevent this is to give each item a quick wipe before packing it.

What to Pack First:

Items in storage

Items in storage should be one of the first things you pack when moving. Whether packed in a storage unit, your garage, or deep in your walk-in closet, these items are easy to pack first when moving since they’re most likely already in boxes.

Out-of-season clothes

These are super easy to pack first when moving because out-of-season clothes are most likely already in boxes as well. On day one of packing, you can go ahead and get them out of the way, giving you enough packing stamina to tackle more difficult parts of your home! Plus, these clothes may not need to be accessed for several months. 

China and other rarely used dishes

You’re probably not going to be hosting any fancy dinner parties during your move. This makes fine china the perfect item to pack first when moving. Just make sure to pack these dishes very carefully and clearly label each box as fragile. While you’re at it, you might want to go ahead and pack other dishes and cookware that you rarely use. Paper plates come in handy when all your dishes are packed.
