It’s that time of the year again, when the weather shifts between frigid colds and suspiciously warm days. Living in New England means it could be 70 degrees today, with the chance of a blizzard tomorrow. New York City in particular has a tumultuous winter season full of drifting snow banks and delayed public transportation. Those of us here at Shleppers Moving & Storage love NYC regardless. Being the best moving company in NYC means we also know all the do’s and don’ts for surviving the winters here. Check out our handy guide below:
What to Wear in NYC During the Winter
As the months of winter go on, the temperatures continue to plummet. Puffy down jackets designed for these harsher weather conditions are a must. Buy a quality jacket – one that is built to last – as the last thing you want to do is replace your salt-and-snow-battered jacket each winter. Tall, waterproof boots are also vital – unless you want ice water-soaked feet on your way to work. Scarves, mittens, hats, socks, and sweaters are also important accessories. Sunglasses can keep your eyes safe and shielded from the bright and reflective snow, and their importance should not be understated.
Winter in NYC: Exercise Caution
Luckily, chances are you won’t have to worry about shoveling your own snow. Your landlord and building staff should take care of that for you. However, as the snow continues to pile up there comes a time when there is nowhere for it to go but up. This make visibility at intersections difficult, so be careful! Also, you should probably be aware of salty slush being splashed at you by nearby traffic. Stand back and be aware of your surroundings!
The Melting (and Re-Freezing)
As the temperature fluctuates, warmer air may lead to an onslaught of melted snow and salt. This leads to contained flooding, and there’s not much that can be done about it. Just be aware of puddles, bring your boots, and get ready for spring to (eventually) arrive. This also means freezing at night so watch out for black ice! You should also be prepared for the occasional March, or even April, blizzard. New England weather likes to keep us on our toes!
Parking in NYC During Winter
Parking bans are common during major storms, so if you own a car, you might want to consider vehicle storage for the winter season. Plows will not hesitate to coat your car in many feet of snow, so plan accordingly.
