If you’re a Millennial who’s looking for a place to live and work that’s relatively affordable, with a good balance of what makes life fun with what makes for a reasonable quality of life, you’ll want to consider the following neighborhoods:
Kip’s Bay: Family friendly, very diverse, and consistently rated one of the best NYC neighborhoods for Millennials, Kip’s Bay is also great when you want to dance and have a good time. The nightlife options run the gamut from semi-rowdy sports bars through sophisticated cocktail lounges. Rents tend to be on the high side, but many apartments are really quite nice.
Chelsea: Conveniently between Midtown and Downtown, Chelsea is a fast-paced neighborhood with a thriving arts community, good schools for the kids, and a strong sense of community. If you like street fairs, festivals, and other events, you’ll love Chelsea. Local residents take pride in how safe the neighborhood feels. Rents are comparable to what you’ll find throughout Manhattan: be aware that people who move to Chelsea tend to stay in Chelsea, so finding the perfect place may take a while.
Greenwich Village: If you’re looking for the feel of life in a small town in NYC, the closest you may come is Greenwich Village. There’s still a few boho elements around to remind you of the Village’s iconic hippie days, and the population is far more liberal than not. Come for the great Italian food, stay for the quiet, homey feel of the neighborhood. Be prepared to pay up for your place – rents run high; if you’re prepared to buy, there are deals to be had.
Prospect Heights: When affordability is a priority, consider Prospect Heights. Very family friendly, with a diverse and active population. The schools are steadily improving, while local crime rates are dropping. There have been conversations about gentrification driving rents up, but for the moment, much of the neighborhood maintains its unique character while remaining reasonably priced.
