3 Things to Know About Moving to a Townhouse

Generally, you know what to expect when it comes to a move. You’ve got to shlep all of that furniture, pack your belongings into boxes, and find a trusted moving company like Shleppers to do all the dirty work for you!

But to do all that, you’ve got to plan for the move first. What kind of place you’re moving into matters, and if you’ve chosen a townhouse, there are some extra considerations for you.
We’re here to provide moving tips, with the top three things you should be aware of before you plan on moving to a townhouse.

Multiple Floors

An important note about living in a townhouse is the fact that there is usually a lot of square footage in a narrow footprint, but in order to get all that square footage, you need multiple floors. That, of course, means multiple flights of stairs you will need to navigate. A three-story or even a four-story townhouse will certainly complicate your moving plans compared to an apartment or a single-floor home, so plan accordingly.

HOA Restrictions

While townhomes are very nice places to live, there may be HOA restrictions that can make your life tough. If you’re not familiar, HOA stands for the homeowner’s association. They are the organization that is given authority to enforce restrictions and rules within a community of homes. They can control things like the pet policy or any additions/subtractions you are allowed to make to the living space. Each HOA is different so be sure to investigate their rules for the piece of property you are planning on moving into.

Parking

Apartment buildings often have large, spacious parking lots as well as a loading dock with a freight elevator just for moving, and single-family homes usually have their own driveway. However, townhouses are often attached to relatively small parking lots that can be challenging for moving, particularly when it is filled with cars. You’ll need to take that into account when deciding on a townhome.
