Many people don’t realize, but the time when you’re moving into or out of your home is one of the times you’re most vulnerable to criminals. Thieves watch neighborhood activity to find vulnerable people to take advantage of – and who’s more vulnerable than someone who is brand new to the neighborhood?
Officer Dave Northway of the Tallahassee Police Department recently told his local ABC affiliate, WTXK, what homeowners can do to protect themselves during a move. The highlights of his presentation include the following safety tips:
Choose a Moving Company Carefully
Do your homework. Search for a reputable moving company. Be very wary of a moving company that demands all the cash up front: this is a red flag that indicates you may want to choose another mover!
Be Aware of Your Surroundings While You Move
If your car is parked on the street & you’re carrying boxes up into your new home, make sure you lock your doors each and every time. It only takes a second for a thief to open a door and make off with boxes of your things! If you don’t want to lock the doors, post a look out whose presence will deter criminal activity.
Check Local Crime Stats – Before You Move!
Many local police departments post statistics reporting what kind of criminal activity occurs in various neighborhoods. This can be good information to have prior to deciding to move to a given location. Check the website of local police departments as well as community newspapers for the best information about your new town.
Be Smart About Box Disposal.
You don’t want to advertise what you have in your home. Be strategic about how you dispose of the boxes expensive electronics like tvs, game systems, and similar items were packed in. If you used the original boxes, don’t dispose of these curbside: they act like a sign letting criminals know exactly what they can expect to find inside.
