Whether you’re moving out of an apartment or house, you’ll want to leave the place as spotless and “ready for the next residents” as possible. Make your life easier when you follow a move-out cleaning checklist — like this one that the Shleppers team has put together!
Declutter
It might be a no-brainer but…make sure that all personal belongings have been removed from the apartment or house that you’re leaving. Double-check in cabinets and closets to make sure you haven’t forgotten some small item in a dark corner. And don’t leave behind any unwanted items, thinking that the new renter or owner might want them. If you need to find a new home for some furniture or wall art, donate them to Goodwill or place them in a personal storage unit.
Repair
Ensure that minor fixes are taken care of before you hand over the keys to your old residence. This includes removing any screws or nails from the walls and filling the holes with putty. If something essential isn’t working, like the front door won’t lock or a back slider door gets stuck, do the courtesy of repairing it. Patch any holes in the drywall yourself or hire a professional to do so. Use paint to touch up scratches and stains on the walls and baseboards, making sure to match the same shade and sheen of the original paint.
Clean
Once all of your stuff has been moved from the old residence and into the new one, it’s time to deep clean for the next residents. We recommend cleaning each room, starting at the top and working your way to the bottom. For instance, dust shelves and ceiling fans, wipe down any pet or toddler slobber on the walls, then clean the floor via mopping and/or vacuuming.
Dust the vents and any blinds or curtains that you’re leaving behind. Thoroughly clean any appliances you’re leaving behind, like washing machines, dishwashers, fridges, and stoves. Make sure to clean the bathrooms. And, if you have a lawn and patio, make sure to cut the grass and sweep the patio one last time.
