Moving to Vermont from NYC: When Changing Addresses Means Changing Everything

New York City is one of the most densely populated places in the country, and Vermont is not. If you’re planning a move from New York City to Vermont, you’d better be ready to have a lot fewer people around. The entire state is home to just over 600,000 people, and a third of them live in the Burlington area. That’s not to say the Green Mountain State is empty. You’ll find plenty of cows, moose and black flies to keep you company.

Here’s what you need to know about life in Vermont:

Driving is essential. If you don’t own a car or drive now, you’ll want to reconsider that position before moving to Vermont. While there are some public transportation options available, and no shortage of people who will tell you everything is within biking distance, the reality is that for most people, life in Vermont requires a car.

Winter lasts forever. Plan on stocking up on cold weather gear. Winter in Vermont is intense – there’s a reason skiing and winter sports are a huge part of the state’s economy. Snow falls in unbelievable quantities, and if you’ve purchased a home, removing that snow from your driveway and roof is your job. On the other hand – the skiing, snowboarding, and other winter adventures are great, and the odds of running into an actual Olympic athlete on the slopes is better than you might think.

Seek and you will find. Many of the things you can take for granted in NYC – great food, live music, theater, and art – all exist in Vermont, but they may be a little harder to find. Be prepared to put a little effort into finding your entertainment, and if you settle anywhere but Burlington, plan on doing some driving. Foodies will love the abundance of farmer’s markets and craft breweries.

A more laid-back lifestyle.  Life in NYC accustoms one to a faster pace of life, and it can cause a bit of culture shock when things in Vermont take a little more time. Vermonters take pride in doing their own thing, at their own pace, and after you’ve been here for a while, you will too.
