Moving Hacks: Packing Up the Bathroom

The bathroom is often the smallest room in the house. That might make you think that packing your bathroom for a move would be super easy – and it can be if you take the time to do the job right. Here’s how to pack the bathroom:

Inspect Everything Before You Pack It

Bathrooms are often very damp rooms, which means they’re more vulnerable to mold and mildew growth. You don’t want to bring any items with mold and mildew on them into your new place. Check everything over carefully before you pack it, especially items like shower curtain liners and bath mats. If they’re less than pristine, it’s time to toss them.

Sometimes Someday Never Comes

If you have a supply of half-used or nearly empty shampoos, body washes, and other toiletry items you were planning on using someday, now is the time to say goodbye. The same holds true for any prescription or over the counter medications that are past their expiration dates.  Dispose of these items safely before your move.

Should You Use Towels and Washcloths to Pack Fragile Bathroom Items?

A common moving tip suggests using bathroom linens, including towels and washcloths, to cushion and protect your fragile items during a move. Is this a good idea? The answer depends on how fragile the items in question are and how upset you’ll be if they get broken.  Towels and washcloths provide relatively minimal amounts of protection and can be sufficient for more durable items that aren’t particularly precious to you. However, if your bathroom décor is fragile and important to you, invest in some proper packing materials so they arrive at your new address in one piece. Added bonus? Doing this means you never have to worry about getting shards of broken glass out of your towels.

An Important Note About Medications and Daily Hygiene Items

The bathroom is where many people store items they need each and every day. This can include medications – prescription and over the counter, supplements, vitamins, contact lens solution, skin care items, shampoos, conditioners, body wash, toothbrushes, toothpaste, mouthwash, floss, and more. Do not pack these items ahead of time, and plan on carrying them with you, rather than sending them in the moving truck. This is especially important if you’re moving a long distance or need any of the medications to stay alive.
