MOVING TO LONG ISLAND FROM NYC

Ready for a change of pace from the hustle and bustle of New York City? Have you considered the possibilities of moving to Long Island? If so, you’re probably ecstatic about the prospect of enjoying ample storage space, playing with the kids (whether human or canine) in a fenced-in yard, and drifting off to sleep listening to the soundscapes of nature, rather than fighting for sleep in a city that never does.

This fish-shaped island is just a hop, skip and a jump (short drive/train ride) away from your current NYC neighborhood. That being said, moving to Long Island shouldn’t be too daunting of a task to handle yourself, right? WRONG!

Making the transition from NYC to LI includes what seems like a never-ending slew of research, signatures, paperwork, and preparation. The whole process is stressful enough before you even begin packing up your belongings to haul them from door to door. Why burden yourself with the stressful tasks of…

Packing your belongings

Renting a moving van

Loading the moving van

Hauling the moving van willed with valuable belongings from NYC to LI

Unloading your belongings from the moving van at your new LI doorstep

Couple sitting on the floor, packing belongings into boxes

…when you can hire a very efficient, highly reliable, expert relocation to handle the move for you at an affordable rate? You already have enough on your plate, let Shleppers Moving & Storage do the leg work for your move to Long Island!

In the meantime, here are a few useful things to know when moving from NYC to Long Island:

Space Galore: Long Island is made up of four counties— Kings (Brooklyn), Queens, Nassau and Suffolk. So yes, Brooklyn and Queens are part of the island, which technically makes LI part of NYC. As far as Nassau & Suffolk are concerned, each county has LOTS of space— something you often don’t realize you’re missing while living in tighter NYC neighborhoods. Chances are, you won’t need to do any downsizing before your move, which makes things a lot easier on your end!

Connections & Commuting: As far as islands go, Long Island is one of the most accessible islands worldwide. It is connected to other boroughs through 13 tunnels and 9 bridges, which means it’s possible to commute to NYC from pretty much anywhere. For those of you who will still be working in the City, you’ll most likely be making the commute from LI to NYC and back up to five or six days a week. Consider investing in a monthly pass to help save some money—also be sure to find out if you employer offers the federal Commuter Tax Benefit.

Renowned Beaches: A pretty sweet percentage of all that space is filled with some of the best beaches on the East Coast. Long Island beaches are world-famous for their fine sand, great waves, and boardwalks that stretch for miles. From Jones Beach State Park to the most eastern tip of the island, LI has some really spectacular beaches for you to enjoy all summer long! The northern coast of LI enjoys the Long Island Sound, while the southern coast sits on the Atlantic Ocean. This split gives you two options depending on whether you enjoy powerful waves of the ocean or the much more mellow currents of the Atlantic Ocean’s tidal estuary.

Wine Time: LI’s climate makes it the perfect place to cultivate wine—and there’s no shortage of it! Check out the collection of vineyards dispersed all along the most eastern end of the island.

Best of Both Worlds: Long Island enjoys both hot summers and cold winters, as offshore winds from the Atlantic Ocean make for frigid winter temperatures, and contrastingly warm, humid summers. The very noteworthy urbanization of NYC has made Manhattan into a metropolitan heat island, so it is often warmer than LI throughout all four seasons. If you’re moving to LI, be prepared for cooler nights throughout all of the four seasons in comparison to the nighttime temperatures you’ve experienced in Manhattan. If your new LI digs don’t include the space for multi-season wardrobe options, consider investing in storage space!

Rush Hour Traffic: Since LI is only 23 miles wide at its widest point, the 7.6 million people can cause some real roadway congestion. When moving to LI, Shleppers will be sure to schedule your move at a time that avoids rush hour traffic.

Bagels: New York bagels are best served on Long Island, period.
