Moving from NYC to Chicago

If you’re planning to move from New York City to Chicago, get ready for an adventure. The two cities have a lot in common – they’re known for their population of strong and unique characters, great food, and passion for professional sports – but there are a few meaningful differences as well. Here’s what you’ll want to keep in mind:

Chicago is More Affordable

We’re not going to tell you Chicago is cheap, because it’s not, but your rent money will get you a much larger place than you’d get in NYC. Two bedrooms average 1,100 square feet; one-bedrooms just under 800.

Winter Weather: Terrible

You think you know snow and cold living in New York City? Wait until you move to Chicago. Expect snow from November to April – and it’s not unusual to see some flakes in October and even early May.  Plan on bringing all of your winter gear with you.

Don’t Have a Car? Maybe Don’t Get One

For a New Yorker who is used to getting around on public transport, adjusting to Chicago’s robust train and bus service will be no big deal. Lots of people do keep cars in Chicago – that’s part of the problem! – but if you do so be prepared to spend quite a bit on parking. That harsh winter weather we were talking about also has a negative impact on automobiles – in between road salt and accidents caused by icy conditions, things can get expensive fast.

But the Food is Amazing

Chicago is an eater’s delight. Proximity to Midwestern cattle yards makes finding a great steak super easy. The deep-dish pizza is famous for a reason, and although it’s hard for a New Yorker to say this, the hot dogs are pretty great. And if you’re a vegetarian, don’t despair: you’re going to find plenty of options. Make sure to take in the Taste of Chicago festival in the summer – it’s a very yummy way to discover new places to eat.
