Moving Day Nutrition: The Do’s & Don’ts

Moving Day Nutrition: The Do’s & Don’ts

As professional movers, we relocate households and businesses every single day. We also eat every single day. This doesn’t mean we’re experts on moving day nutrition, but we do have some first-hand insights on what foods you do and don’t want to eat when you’re moving:

Do: Water & Sports Drinks

It is strongly recommended that you drink lots of water and healthy beverages during your move. Sports drinks are good to replenish electrolytes you lose when you’re sweating. Dehydration can really ruin your day. Make sure everyone drinks a lot of water and healthy beverages!

Don’t: Energy Drinks & Booze

Energy drinks are loaded with caffeine and sugar, which makes them seem like a useful addition to moving day, but they’re really not: when the buzz wears off, the crash makes moving a much tougher job than it needs to be. Speaking of crash – skip the beer & cocktails until you’re safely settled into your new address. Drinking and moving just don’t mix.

Do: Carbs & Protein

Pay attention to what high-performance athletes eat prior to their major events. Big heaping portions of spaghetti and meatballs aren’t just delicious: they provide lots of carbs and protein, both of which your body turns into energy you’ll need to move furniture & boxes.

Don’t: Deep-Fried Foods

Deep-fried foods are delicious, but they won’t necessarily help you move. Many of these foods are greasy, which means they need extra energy to digest, and they can really weigh your stomach down. Some people’s GI systems don’t tolerate fried food well, which results in lots of time spent in the bathroom – not exactly helpful when you’re trying to get your household moved.

Do: Lots of Healthy Snacks

During the move, there may not be time to have a proper meal. But you don’t want to take on a job of this size on an empty stomach. Keep your energy levels up and your mood stable with lots of healthy snacks. Nuts, cheese, fruit, granola bars and protein bars are favorite snacks of our crew.

Don’t: Overload on Candy

We’re not about to tell any stressed out homeowner to skip the chocolate. That being said, you don’t want to have too much candy on moving day: the sugar helps in the short term, but won’t sustain you long. Remember the lessons of Halloween – too much candy on an empty stomach makes everyone cranky and miserable.
