Millennials Are Moving … to the Country?

The high cost of real estate in cities like New York, Boston, and Atlanta has led many older Millennials to purchase homes in the Midwest. That’s according to this USA Today article by Bob Sullivan of Credit.com. Ohio, South Dakota and North Dakota have seen strong population growth; other more rural states like Pennsylvania, Wisconsin and Kentucky round out the list.

As one of the busiest moving companies in NYC, we see a lot of household moves. We’ve helped quite a few Millennials with long distance moves, including moves to California and Texas as well as the states on the USA Today list. But we’ve also helped quite a few Millennials with neighborhood moves, or in city moves. We don’t have the same data Bob Sullivan has, but anecdotally, a good many Millennials are still choosing to move to New York – and once they’re here, they tend to stay here.

Here’s some other tidbits we noticed while moving Millennials in New York City:

Lots of Millennials are parents. If you read all the social commentary, it makes Millennials sound like a bunch of young, entitled kids. But in real life, at least half of the Millennials we move are parents. We tend to see Millennials moving into larger apartments as their families grow up. This means moves take a little longer – when it was time to pack and move a studio apartment, all the packing could typically be done by our professional crew in less than 4 hours. When the family has grown to occupy a 2 or 3 br apartment, packing can take the better part of a day.

Millennials appreciate saving money. Everyone has a budget, and Millennials seem determined to make the most of theirs. They are the households that are most likely to take advantage of money saving moving tips like scheduling a move mid-month or mid-week, and to reuse moving boxes.
