Life Imitates Art: Our Favorite Movies About Moving

There’s nothing better than movie night – especially if you’ve got some great popcorn and the company of your favorite people. We’re particularly partial to movies about moving. Here are Shleppers Moving & Storage’s top movie picks:

With a Little Kid

Up (2009) is a great movie. Carl’s got the best moving strategy we’ve ever seen – just tie hundreds and hundreds of helium balloons to your house and set sail to your next destination. There’s Russell, the young Wilderness Explorer, and Doug, a talking dog. Up was nominated for five Academy Awards, including Best Picture.

Also good with kids: Toy Story (1995).

With Your Sweetheart

Howl’s Moving Castle (2004) is an absolutely gorgeous animated film by Hayao Miyazaki. Moving is all about life changes, deciding what to hold onto and what to let go of as you move through a complex world. This story explores those themes in depth alongside a riveting storyline that makes you think. If you love having long conversations about a movie’s story and meaning with your partner, you’re going to love Howl’s Moving Castle.

Not so much into the deep meaningful discussion and just want to laugh your butt off? You can’t really go wrong with Dumb and Dumber (1994), which captures much of the spirit of a long-distance move gone wrong.

With Your Parents

The Money Pit (1986) is in many ways the classic ‘80s film. While you were curling your hair to unbelievable heights and practicing your Moonwalk, your parents were building their adult life. This fun look at home ownership and marriage is every bit as hysterical now as it was back then. Serve wine.

Need some real old-time laughs? The Beverly Hillbillies is the classic backwoods family strikes it rich story that inspired a 1993 movie and a classic TV series. You can find the classic episodes on YouTube.

With the Whole Family

Cheaper by the Dozen (2003) is a funny and heartfelt film the whole family can enjoy. If anything will make you feel better about the chaos of moving, it’s watching the Baker family trying to handle a move with 12 kids. If they can do it, so can you! Get the popcorn ready for a fun, family-friendly movie night.
