Size Matters: When it comes to packing your fragile items, think small. Not only are smaller boxes easier to handle, but less free space inside a box will prevent the item from shifting around – and potentially breaking – during transit. In addition to the size of the box, the style also matters. Never use a flimsy box to pack your valuables as the items may fall through. For added support, secure the bottoms of the box with extra tape. This precaution serves as a safety measure if the bottom of the box were to sag due to weight.
Packing Carefully: First, you’ll need to gather all of your supplies. Now that you have your box picked out, consider that the way you pack might have an impact on the safety of your breakables. First, layer your heaviest items toward the bottom of the box so their weight won’t crush the smaller items. Next, make sure to use cardboard dividers for small glassware like wine glasses, ornaments, and vases. The dividers will keep the glass from colliding as the boxes shifts in transit. Finally, fill any additional space in the box with packing paper, bubble wrap, or other padding to keep all items in place while providing extra protection.
Take Your Time: It’s tempting to rush the packing process as moving day approaches but cutting corners when packing your fragile belongings can cause problems later down the road. Take the time to wrap each individual piece and add those extra touches like stuffing hollow pieces with padding and adding extra tape to the bottom of the box, you’ll thank yourself later.
