Operation Explore the Neighborhood: Queens

When you move to a new neighborhood, there are some things you’re going to seek out right away: the best coffee shop, your kids’ school, and the grocery store. After the essentials have been taken care of, you can get into the fun part of exploring the neighborhood – discovering the historical attractions, quirky culture and one of a kind businesses that make a community unique. Queens has more than its fair share of fun things to do, and in this edition of Explore the  Neighborhood, we’re going to share some of our favorites from the list of great things to do in Queens created by Atlas Obscura:

Houdini’s Grave

The ultimate escape artist finally met his match. Harry Houdini was the world’s best-known illusionist, famous for freeing himself from impossible situations. After his demise, Houdini was buried in the Machpela Cemetery in Glendale. The American Society of Magicians holds a ceremony honoring Houdini every November. They’re also responsible for the current bust of Houdini that is displayed on his grave: it’s the fourth version, as the previous versions were stolen by morbid curiosity seekers.

The Brooklyn Grange Gardens

Bursting with life, the Brooklyn Grange Gardens are located at 37-18 Northern Blvd in Queens. One is situated atop the Standard Motors Building, and the other is on the roof of Building Number 3 in the Brooklyn Navy Yard. In season, these two rooftop gardens produce more than 40,000 pounds of food. It’s a great place to bring the kids, so they can see where food comes from. There’s also chickens and beehives. And if you find yourself with the urge to do a little farming and want a great workout, you can volunteer your time helping grow food to feed the community.

The Steinway Piano Factory

Surprisingly fascinating, the Steinway Piano Factory is where some of the world’s finest musical instruments are born. Most of our experience is with moving pianos, rather than playing them, and even we were mesmerized by the ancient machines used to make the frames for grand pianos. Did you know they make the keys by hand? Factory tours are on Tuesdays. Wear comfortable shoes – it’s quite a bit of walking, but well worth it. Located at 1 Steinway Place in Queens.
