When you move to a new neighborhood, there are a few things you’ll find right away. These critical essentials include the best way to work, the kids’ school, groceries and gas stations. But there are other things to discover, including offbeat businesses, quirky museums, and cultural highlights, hidden in every neighborhood. Yonkers has a reputation for hidden gems – attractions not everyone knows about – and this week, we’re going to shine a spotlight on some of our family-friendly favorites:
The Science Barge: This seasonal attraction is perfect for anyone who loves science, fresh farm produce, and imagining what our lives will be like in the future. Docked off of the Yonkers Pier, the Science Barge is a favorite of school groups. It’s an environmental education center that has neat working displays about solar power, wind turbines, and getting drinkable water out of the river. The Science Barge is also open to the public on the weekend for a minimal donation – kids under 10 are free.

Tibbets Brook Park: If you’re looking for outdoor family fun, head for this 161 acre park. It’s home to frequent festivals and celebrations, and a really awesome aquatic center that’s perfect whether you want to swim laps or splash around with the kids. History lovers will enjoy knowing the park was once the property of George Tibbet, one of the region’s first pioneers. If you’re planning a big event, like a family reunion or wedding, portions of the park can be rented.

Legoland Discovery Center: Legoland is a great place to keep the kids entertained for hours. There’s plenty of Legos to play with, a soft toy area, a very cool 4D movie theater and a factory tour that young engineers will especially enjoy. It’s a little on the pricey side, but you can save by booking ahead online – some packages include a free collectible item to take home.
