Amidst all the hustle and bustle of packing for a move, it can be easy to forget all the additional tasks that come with moving, and changing your address is one of them. The last thing you want is to have all your important packages get lost or end up paying utilities for an apartment you no longer live in, so it’s crucial to do your homework when it comes to changing your address. Here are some of the most important steps to take before and after you move:
Pre-Move
Call Your Utility Companies: Your friends and family are some of the people you might talk to about your move in advance, but don’t forget your utility companies. Scheduling a shut-off is important to ensure you aren’t being charged after you leave the residence. Just be sure to remove any food from the fridge or freezer before the scheduled shut-off.
Set Up New Utilities: Once you’ve picked a new home, contact local utility providers with your new address and move-in date to ensure you won’t be without electricity or water after a long move.
Inform your internet provider: Moving into a space without Wi-Fi is a nightmare in the day and age of working from home. When it’s time to move, you have a few options. First, call your internet/cable company and inform them that you’ll be moving and provide them with your moving day. They can then schedule a technician to come to your new address and set up your Wi-Fi or provide you with instructions to do it yourself. Some areas, however, don’t support all internet carriers. If you’re moving to an apartment building or area that doesn’t support your current carrier, you’ll need to switch. Simply call your current carrier and they’ll provide you with instructions to either send back your router in the mail or recycle it.
Transfer your renter’s insurance: self-explanatory for those of us that rent. This can easily be done online or via phone call.
Post-Move
Update Voter Resignation: It’s easy and can be done online.
Update Driver’s License: This lets the DMV register your car at the right address and makes sure that important mail, like reminders to re-register your car, gets sent to your new home
Change Your Address: Let the IRS and Social Security office know of your address change if necessary and confirm mail forwarding with the post office.
Update your subscriptions and auto buy settings: If you receive any regular magazines or have any box subscriptions that need to come to your new address, hop online and update your settings. You don’t want your meal delivery service to end up rotting on the front step of your old home. Additionally, if you have an address saved on any website you regularly shop, change your info on your profile to avoid ordering anything to an old address.
Remind your family and friends: Though you likely brought it up last time you’ve seen them, it’s important to subtly remind your family and friends about your new home. You don’t want to miss out on any of your great-aunt’s homemade birthday cards.
