As a top moving company in New York City, Shleppers has moved a lot of fitness equipment. Weight benches, elliptical machines, treadmills, spin bikes…you name it, we’ve moved it. You’d think we’d come away from moving all of this exercise equipment extra-buff, but no: instead, the benefits went directly to our head, and we’ve gotten some great insights on how to make moving your gym and exercise equipment easier:
Step One: Measure Before You Move
If you’re changing neighborhoods, you want to be sure that your new apartment has enough space for the exercise equipment you’re planning to fit into it. Sometimes people overestimate how much space the new place has, and it’s never a great surprise to discover that everything you own isn’t going to fit into the space you have. Short and long term storage is available if you know you’re not going to have enough space available right away: ask your customer service representative for details.
Step Two: No Moving Parts!
Moving exercise equipment involves lots of moving parts. You don’t want the elements of your exercise equipment moving around while it’s being transported from your old address to your new place. Not only can your exercise equipment get damaged, but sudden weight shifts can also make transporting these items dangerous for you or for anyone carrying the equipment. Use zip ties, strapping, and other appropriate measures to keep the moveable elements secure during transport. If you’re not sure how to do this, let your customer service representative know. A member of our team will be able to advise you or provide assistance as needed.
Step Three: You Don’t Need to Move All the Weights at Once
Fitness fanatics can accumulate quite a bit of weight without even realizing it. We’re talking about barbells and dumbbells in addition to any weights that are part of a weight bench set. As part of our pre-move process, we will inventory weights and make a specific plan with you regarding what’s involved in moving those safely. If you’re doing this on your own, we urge you to take special care packing weights securely and to break the weight collection down into several smaller, more manageable loads. You’ll already be getting quite a workout moving your things – why risk injury by trying to lift too much at once. Make use of handcarts and other assistive devices as much as possible: a moving dolly can make the job much easier.
