About Us

In the Community

Giving back to the community is one of the key elements of the Shleppers mission statement.

For Shleppers, business has never been just about making money. In 2001, Shleppers’ local NYC movers rose to meet the challenge of the tragic disaster on September 11. The company’s support at Chelsea Piers during the rescue efforts consisted of manpower, trucks and storage units during the initial months following the crisis and it demonstrated the true partnership of Shleppers and the City of New York.

Recently, Shleppers cooperated with numerous organizations to provide relief to communities that were severely affected by Hurricane Sandy. Click here to read about all of this work.

As a company, we leverage our infrastructure and core strengths for the benefit of many NYC charities and volunteers:

Trick or Treating in a New Neighborhood: Moving Tips for Families

If you’ve successfully completed a local or long-distance move shortly before Halloween, your kids are probably concerned about how they’re going to celebrate the holiday in their new town. We’ve gathered tips from experienced parents who have completed several moves with their children. Here’s what they have to share:

Talk to Other Parents to Find Out What’s Going On

Every community has its own approach to Halloween. Some have organized parades and parties while others are more ‘everyone does their own thing’. Trick or treating can be a door-to-door event or centralized at a location like a school, shopping mall, or park. Talk to other parents or the staff at your children’s school to find out how things work where you are now.

Follow Basic Safety Rules

When you don’t know who your neighbors are, deciding where to take the children trick or treating can seem overwhelming. Follow the basic safety rules: go only to well-lit houses where the residents appear to be enthusiastically engaged with the idea of celebrating Halloween. Cheerful decorations, colorful lights and jack o lanterns are all good signs. If a house is dark or the décor is too menacing for your little ones, give it a pass and move on to the next place.

Plan On Sticking Together

Parents will want to keep an especially watchful eye to make sure everyone sticks together throughout the evening. Halloween can be overwhelming; throw in the fact you’re in a strange, new neighborhood and everyone might not be entirely sure of how to get home on their own if they become separated and the value of sticking together becomes clear. Pro tip: make sure the new home’s address is already loaded in the GPS on your kid’s phones.

Moving with an Autistic Child

Many children who are on the autism spectrum find great comfort in familiar surroundings and a regular routine. Moving involves a lot of change, both of addresses and in the way a family’s life works on a day to day basis. This is stressful for everyone, but for children who have autism or other sensory disorders it can be overwhelming.

Moving with an autistic kidAs New York’s leading residential moving company, we’ve helped lots of families relocate. We proudly support many of New York’s family organizations. Moving families who have children with special needs and other health concerns matters to all of us at Shleppers. Here’s what we’ve learned during these moves:

1) It Is Possible To Keep Schedule Disruptions to a Minimum: Our team of moving professionals can do their thing while your child is at school, attending after-school activities, or is otherwise occupied, thereby eliminating the stress and tension that some children experience when strangers come into their home and start taking all the stuff out and loading it into big moving trucks.

2) It is Important to Answer Children’s Questions: While all children care to some extent about their possessions, for children with autism, the safety of their collection or favorite items is of extreme concern. If it is helpful for your child to have one of our team members explain how carefully their things will be moved, and how these items will be protected from being damaged or lost while being moved, we will happily do this. Having access to this information is very calming for some children.

3) Parents and Caregivers Need Help Too: During a move, the adults in the autistic child’s life can find they have to do a lot to support their child. At the same time, there’s all the realities of a household move to handle: coordinating with the moving company, sorting and packing possessions, labeling everything, and more. By the way, odds are you still have other responsibilities too – including your job! The support and assistance of family and friends can help make an overwhelming time more manageable: if someone offers help, accept it, and be willing to ask for what you need. It can help to keep a running to-do list of things that need to happen to make your move a success. That way when someone can help you, you’ll know which direction to point them in.

In The Community: Schlepping to Support American Friends of Rabin Medical Center

Schlepping to Support American Friends of Rabin Medical Center

Shleppers Moving & Storage is proud to support the Greater New York area’s many non-profit organizations. Some of them are quite near and dear to our hearts, including supporting local initiatives, the American Jewish and Israeli communities, and the larger community as a whole. This past June we were privileged to join in supporting the 2015 Cheryl Diamond NYC 5K Schlep for Israel’s Rabin Medical Center in downtown Manhattan. A great event with an even greater purpose, we proudly helped raise money and awareness for breast and ovarian cancer.

In partnership with other local companies and non-profit organizations, the Shleppers Team donated services to help with logistical setup, breakdown and route coordination for the 2015 NYC 5K Schlep. All proceeds went to directly benefit the BRCA Gene Multidisciplinary Clinic serving women at high risk of breast and ovarian cancer, as well as funding research to find cures for breast and ovarian cancers at Israel’s Rabin Medical Center’s Davidoff Cancer Center- a world class facility for the treatment and prevention of cancer. If you were one of the many who joined us, our heartfelt thanks go out to you too!
