Who’s Moving: As far as who is moving most often, people in their 20s dominate that demographic. Young folks tend to have less career stability, therefore, they need to change housing is more frequently than other age groups. Simply trying to find a place to settle down is another reason people in their early 20s move around more. Additionally, those in their 30s and 40s are more likely to transition from renting to owning, making them less likely to move consistently.

Where are People Moving in 2023: Unsurprisingly, many residents are staying in their area, with 84% of local moves occurring without leaving the immediate area. Many that leave their immediate area stay within their metropolitan zone or state. As far as those leaving their current state, many are heading to warmer weather. Florida and Texas experienced the highest influx of new residents in 2021 with around 221,000 and 170,000. Arizona, North Carolina, and South Carolina also saw a large increase in their populations. The three states that saw the most residents leave in 2021 were California, New York, and Illinois.

What are the costs: In recent years, the cost of moving locally or within 100 miles averaged between $800 to $2,500 for Americans. The cost of long-distance moves, on the other hand, has varied – costing the average American between $600 to over $10,000. Such wide fluctuation is due to different services provided, the length of the move, as well as the size of the move.
