Welcome Home!
The first few days in a brand-new city can be overwhelming. Even if your last town wasn’t your favorite home so far, at least you were comfortable and knew what to expect day-to-day by the time your lease ended. Along with the excitement of moving cities comes the discomfort of not feeling at home until you’ve settled in. To help you feel at home in your new city, these are the key places you should check out within your first few days.
What to do After your Full-Service Move
The movers are gone. You’re tired. You couldn’t look at another box even if you wanted to. It’s time for a break, but where do you go? You don’t know anything about your new city (yet!) Here are some key places to look for during your first few outings in your new city.
The initial drive or walk-through: Once you have some time, cruise around and acclimate yourself to the area immediately surrounding your new home. Are there any key landmarks that might help you identify your area later? Once you’re familiar with the few blocks around your home, find the places you’ll need to frequent. Where is the closest grocery store? The closest pharmacy? The closest convenience stores? Knowing there are places you can go to get the essentials as you’re settling in will ease some of the stress of living in an unfamiliar area.
Grab a drink: Now that you have the essential stores checked off, it’s time to look for places that will make your life more fun. If you’re a morning person, pop into a few local coffee shops to see which one you feel most comfortable in, or check out new breakfast restaurants every now and then. If you’re more of a night owl, check out the local bars to see which one you’ll prefer to frequent. Having a “go-to” place in a new city will make you feel more comfortable and confident leaving your new house and exploring the city.
Nature therapy awaits: Finally, it’s time to find a place to visit when you just need to get away. When living in a new city, it’s easy to feel contained in your new house, so finding a place to relax away from home is an important step to acclimation. Find a trail nearby where you can walk, bike, or take the dog for a walk. If you have kids, maybe there is a park nearby to go get some time in the fresh air. While it can seem a bit intimidating at first to explore a completely unfamiliar city, a huge part of feeling at home in your new city comes from leaving the house.
