Tips for Unpacking – Things You Should Do After You Move

Why is unpacking after moving home so hard? Usually, all the focus is on getting out of your old home, and little regard is given to all the work you still need to do after moving day.

But unpacking and setting up a new home can be just as daunting and overwhelming as moving out. Everything is in boxes, the new home is unfamiliar to you, the area may be unfamiliar, and you may have even moved away from family and friends, so you have no support network now.

It is easy to become overwhelmed when there are so many things to do. No need to get overwhelmed! Our local moving company in NYC is here with an unpacking strategy and a little motivation to get you started and on with your new life.

Checklist #1: Plan

Make a plan. Pick a few small tasks a day, or a room a day, depending on what free time you have. Trying to have an unpacking marathon is daunting, so a room a day or a set number of boxes per day will give you easy targets to aim for. Also, the more you have planned ahead of time, the easier it will be once you move.

Checklist #2: Label

Labeling your boxes should be a no-brainer! Attach labels to all your boxes to immediately know what box needs to go where in your new house. Boxes labeled as “kitchen” should contain all the kitchenware and be set within the kitchen for quick and easy unpacking. The same goes for all the other boxes. This organization not only makes the transfer of boxes from the truck to the house a lot easier but when it comes to unpacking, you can fly through them in a flash because the boxes are already where they need to be.

Checklist #3: Pack and Unpack in Order of Need

When you’re packing for the move, try to pack the most necessary items together. Since kitchen items, bedding, and clothing are essential within the first few days of your move, pack these belongings together and label the boxes clearly so you can open them quickly. After that, you can unpack the secondary items you need, like furniture, small appliances, and cleaning supplies. Leave your less needed belongings, like knickknacks and home décor, for the last stage of your unpacking.

Checklist #4: Limit Distractions

Aka…put the phone in the closet! It’s amazing how distracted you can get when unpacking- especially when you lack motivation. Next thing you know, there is no Google search too weird or YouTube video not interesting. Know your worst offending distractions and disarm them – Turn off the phone and tape the fridge and pantry doors until your unpacking session is over.
