This May, Shleppers Moving & Storage is celebrating Jewish Heritage Month by taking a look not only at the history of our New York moving company, but the history of our people as a whole and their proficient knack for relocating. You see, moving and migration is an integral part of the Jewish story, and as a Jewish-owned and -operated moving company, we believe it appropriate to honor and recognize this piece of our peoples’ past— as well as highlight the edge it gives us in the present!
But first, let’s take a look at perhaps the most obvious piece of history embedded in the Shleppers’ name, and that’s, well… the Shleppers name!
What’s In a Name? Shleppers Moving & Storage
Our moving company’s name stems from the Yiddish word, “shlepn” which means “to drag,” (referring to either something or oneself). Yiddish is a Germanic language originally crafted by Jews in Central and Eastern Europe. It is written in the Hebrew alphabet and contains a significant foundation of Hebrew terms, along with some words borrowed from Slavic languages.
The modern form of “shlepn” can be spelled “schlepp,” “shlep,” or “shlepp”, and it’s used to express something that is seen as unpleasant to do, such as making a tedious journey. For instance, Jewish immigrants “shlepped” to America in search of a better life during the first half of the 1800s.
Speaking of a better life, our people have been moving, migrating, and shlepping in search of a better quality of life since days of old. In fact, the first major dispersion of the Jews from their homeland goes all the way back to the 8th Century BCE with the Assyrian exile!
So, as you can see, our people have been doing this for quite some time. It’s practically in our blood! As far as Shleppers Moving & Storage is concerned, our NYC moving company has been shlepping for local and long-distance moves since its inception in 1978. That’s over 40 years spent helping the New York kibbitz shlep their stuff all over the world!
