Declutter your Home, Free up Space
No matter what, if you are moving from a large home to a smaller space, moving can be tricky. Figuring out where all your stuff is going to fit and which stuff you need to get rid of is tough. The main idea in downsizing is to purge your belongings of things you don’t need without getting rid of important items. Downsizing requires a lot of time and consideration, so you don’t wind up making mistakes and disposing of items you are going to have to buy again. Downsizing a home can be very stressful and lead to anxiety especially for people getting rid of belongings they love.
Here are a few tips and tricks for effectively downsizing and making the transition as smooth as possible, whether you are moving or freeing up space.
Downsize Big Items Before Moving
Getting rid of all the large furniture, unnecessary beds, dressers, etc. is crucial when you are downsizing. There is no reason to hold onto extra pieces of big furniture that you have no room for at all. If you want to keep the extra beds, tables, couches and so on, you can rent a storage unit or pay for the furniture to be moved.
Keep the Small Belongings
When you are downsizing, it is easy to just throw away all the small stuff like clothing, dishes, decorations, etc. However, you may end up needing the small items and repurchasing them so you should not throw away any items you are using currently or seasonally. If the items have sentimental value or purpose, then keep them.
Declutter Each Room
Go through every single room, from your basement to your attic and through all closets, cabinets and garage. There will be so many items that you find tucked away on shelves or behind furniture or in storage that you don’t use. You may think you will use it one day, but chances are you won’t.
Plan Ahead!
Before downsizing completely, plan your storage ahead. After you separate all the items you are going to throw away from the ones you are going to keep, you may still be overwhelmed with a lot of stuff. Figure out how to make the space bigger by implementing storage solutions such as hanging shelves and hooks, organizational tools to fit in your closets and cabinets, shoe storage, under-bed storage, and more.
One-year Rule
By following the one-year rule, it is easy to get rid of your clutter fast. It is very enticing to hold on to items you don’t use or need anymore, especially if it has sentimental value, memories or you may think you will use it one day. However, if you haven’t used this item in the last year, then you are unlikely to use it currently or in the future. Any item that falls into this category should be sold, donated, or thrown away with the rest of the junk. Some of these belongings may include old clothes, school projects, and old toys.
Re-Home Items
By this, we mean to give any special item that you don’t have room or use for to someone close to you. If the item has a special meaning to you, try to keep it in the family or give it to your friends who understand the importance and special meaning of the item.
Digitize
CDs, DVDs, cassettes, pictures, videos and important documents can take up a lot of unnecessary space. Save space and digitize all these songs, movies, and documents by saving them on the cloud or an external hard drive.
Important: Downsizing doesn’t have to be a painful or stressful experience. Even though parting with sentimental items may be emotional, try to think about what you are getting in return for disposing of all the clutter. Be a realist when deciding on which belongings to keep and which to toss. Ask yourself what you use and need and whether you will need it in the future.
