Is it time for you to consider a move to New York City? If you are struggling, or just need a bit of inspiration, allow us to help. Shleppers Moving & Storage is NYC’s premiere moving company. We know the city like the back of our hands, so we would like to help. Astoria and Long Island City are two NYC neighborhoods that are often compared and contrasted. After all, they sit adjacent to each other, and each offers slightly different lifestyle options. In this blog we will briefly compare the two, in order to make your decision a bit easier.
Welcome to Astoria
Sitting comfortably outside of Manhattan, while still being easily accessible (you can be there in 20 minutes if you take the subway), Astoria is a beautiful neighborhood that is revered by many New Yorkers. Tons of restaurants, bars, clubs, and more round out this multicultural neighborhood.
A Slice of Egypt
A large immigrant population allows this neighborhood to embrace what NYC is known for: its diversity. The massive Astoria Park features tennis courts, the city’s oldest pool, and a children’s playground. Little Egypt, located from 28th Avenue to Astoria Boulevard, features many unique restaurants and hookah bars. As this neighborhood continues to be further gentrified, we expect it to get even better.
Longing for Long Island?
Previously a mostly industrialized neighborhood, Long Island City has been on the rise since 2001. Now packed with plenty of condos and high-rises, this neighborhood is a bit more “city-like” in comparison to Astoria. Ramen and BBQ restaurants are among the best in all of NYC, and there are more than enough spots for live music.
Worth the Price?
In terms of rent cost, Astoria has a slightly lower average rent cost in comparison to Long Island City. However, Long Island City is the place to be for young professionals looking to make it big in the business world. The East River Ferry is a great option for quick access to Manhattan, and due to the recent construction much of the neighborhood still feels brand new.
