Then & Now

The district was first purchased as a piece of land by Effingham B. Sutton in 1875. Sutton built a row of brownstone buildings, and the rest was history.

In the early 1900s, the upcoming neighborhood halted dead in its tracks as poverty washed over this Queensboro Bridge waterfront area. Tenements and street gangs were numerous, including street gang “Dead End Kids.”

When American trendsetters like Anne Harriman Vanderbilt and Anne Morgan arrived on the scene in the 1920’s, the neighborhood regained its former glory with opulent townhouses overlooking the East River. More wealthy socialites moved to the area soon thereafter, such as Kenneth Cole, Marilyn Monroe and Sigourney Weaver.

Today, the Sutton Place neighborhood is evolving beyond its traditional vibe with recently constructed organic food stores and other trendy types of businesses. Two parks are located in the area at the ends of 57^th and 53^rd Streets.
