Changing neighborhoods can be a little overwhelming. All at once, you need to figure out the best way to get to the train, and what the routine to get the kids to school is going to look like, and how to grab a quick bite to eat that’s good, reasonably priced, and won’t kill your stomach.
Over the years, Shleppers has helped thousands of New Yorkers move. Along the way, we’ve learned a few moving hacks that make settling into a new neighborhood easy and efficient. Here are some of our favorites:
Do Your Homework Before Relocating to NYC
Spend a little time researching your new neighborhood before you get there. Not only will this give you an idea of what to expect, but you might learn about local businesses and attractions that you’ll want to familiarize yourself with.
If you have kids, reach out to their school before you arrive. It may be possible to have the kids meet their teacher or at least take a tour of the school before classes start. This sneak peek makes it easier for kids to handle a neighborhood move with grace.
Pretend You’re a Tourist
New Yorkers tend to go where they need to go, moving as quickly and efficiently as possible. Just for once, try squashing that instinct and go for a leisurely stroll around your new neighborhood. Take in the sights. Read the signs. Give yourself the time to familiarize yourself with your community.
Look for Neighborhood Facebook Groups
Social media is a mixed blessing, to be sure, but one of the things that is pretty neat are Facebook groups. Some groups are targeted to special interests, like Parents or Foodies or whatever. Find the one that makes sense for you, and join. You don’t have to contribute to the conversation right away – simply lurking and reading can help you get a sense of who your new neighbors are.
