Living in Battery Park City

Man-Made Manhattan Neighborhood: Battery Park City

Beginning in the late 90s and wrapping up in 2011, the construction of the World Trade Center and the NYC Water Tunnel contributed to the planning, collection and execution of more than 3 million cubic yards of rock and soil to compose a 92-acre area on the southwestern tip of Manhattan Island. This executed land reclamation atop of the Hudson River created what New Yorker’s now call Battery Park City.

The layout of this NYC district is true to its name; a planned residential neighborhood with more than one-third of the area being covered by parkland, of which restoration reached completion in 2013. Battery Park City also plays host to buildings designed for residency, commercial and retail properties. Though being one of NYC’s newer neighborhoods, Battery Park City is nothing short of character.

Battery Park City’s residential areas are divided into northern and southern divisions by Brookfield Place (formerly known as the World Financial Center). The southern area is then subdivided into three smaller areas: Gateway Plaza, the “Rector Place Residential Neighborhood”, and the “Battery Place Residential Neighborhood.” Grocery stores, dining establishments and cinemas line the area; as the district is about as close as NYC gets to a suburban neighborhood.

Living in Manhattan: Now & Then

Enjoy views of the Freedom Tower, the Jersey City skyline and the Statue of Liberty while discovering your new neighborhood. What you know now as Battery Park City was, in 1929, land intended for $50,000,000 worth of residential development in service of Wall Street region employees. However, when the neighborhood’s foundation was hollowed out for building, workers were met with the ghosts of sunken docks, ships and bulkheads—leading to a pause in construction that was never resumed.

Post-construction, this stretch of land remained mostly stagnant until the 1960s when Nelson Rockefeller went up against private firms supported by the mayor to repossess the area. In 1966, the governor revealed a proposal to begin the creation of Battery Park City. Construction was touch-and-go throughout the years leading to the area’s completion. When all was said and done, Battery Park City now hosted 9.3 million sq. ft. of commercial area, 7.2 million sq. ft. of residential space, and almost 36 acres of open Lower Manhattan space. The accomplishment of Battery Park City’s creation acted as exemplary grand-scale planning that veered away from the urban restitution frame of mind of the times.

Battery Park City Movers

Today, two of the largest residential buildings in Battery Park City include Millennium Point and The Solaire; the former of which offering 113 luxury condominiums and playing host to The Ritz-Carlton Battery Park.  The Solitaire was the first green domestic building in the United States, designed as a naturally-progressive residential establishment.
