So you’ve moved into a new place and you want to celebrate. Housewarming parties can be a lot of fun, but they do require a certain amount of work. You want to time your housewarming party properly, so you can truly enjoy it. With that in mind, here are some do’s and don’t to consider if you’re deciding when to have a housewarming party:
DO:
Have your housewarming party within a reasonable amount of time of moving into your new place. The whole point of a housewarming party is you’re celebrating being in a new place. If you’ve been in that new place for a year or longer, it’s no longer new. In that instance, just have a party!
DON’T:
Have your housewarming party before you’re really ready. There’s no law that says you have to be completely unpacked and organized before hosting a party, but you will want to be settled in enough that you know where all the essentials – things like drinks glasses and snack plates – are!
DO:
Check the calendar before scheduling your housewarming party. Before committing to a date for the housewarming party, check the calendar to be sure no other major events your family and friends will be attending are also happening that day. We’re not saying you shouldn’t schedule your housewarming on the same day your sibling gets married, but it’s probably better not to.
DON’T:
Try to please everyone with your schedule. Once you’ve made sure your date isn’t in conflict with major events, stick with it. There will always be a guest who can only come if you schedule your party for the third Wednesday after 8 pm, while another guest can’t possibly come if you schedule for the third Wednesday after 8 pm. It’s impossible to please everyone, so don’t make yourself crazy trying!
DO:
Take your standards into account. If you’re not going to be happy with your housewarming party unless the house looks stunning, is perfectly decorated, and you have tons of Instagram-worthy snacks available, give yourself time to make this happen. On the other hand, if your party style is much more “Sit on the boxes we haven’t unpacked yet and help yourself to a beer” there’s no need to wait.
DON’T:
Forget to give yourself some recovery time. Even if you have the best professional moving company in NYC, moving house is still a major undertaking. It’s easy to underestimate how much time you’ll need to feel like yourself again. It’s a good idea to put some downtime into your schedule before committing to holding a party.
