Moving is a funny business. You see people during one of the most chaotic periods in their life, and with your skills and experience, you get to make their lives better. It’s very satisfying to see families moving into new homes, or businesses into a larger location – whether it’s right in the neighborhood or a long distance move. We’re very lucky to have fantastic customers, and meet people with the most extraordinary personalities regularly. But if you ask what the very best part of this job is, we’ve got two words for you: stretch wrap.
I am a mover in NY and yes, stretch wrap is my guilty pleasure. So much of moving involves packing and lifting heavy boxes. It’s important work, but it can get a little routine. Stretch wrap is anything but routine. Think of a really tough roll of cling wrap – thick, durable plastic that sticks to itself. Stretch wrap is often used to secure boxes stacked on pallets, but it has many other fun uses.
The typical household contains more than a few awkwardly shaped items that just don’t fit into boxes in any sensible way – thinks like curtain rods, umbrellas, a collection of antique walking sticks. Gather these items into a bundle, wrap them in bubble wrap, and wrap your bubble wrap column in stretch wrap. Everything will be secure in seconds – for extra, extra peace of mind, secure further with packing tape.
Some people have multi-million dollar paintings on their walls that need custom built wooden shipping crates to be moves. Some people have a poster they bought in college and still like well enough to move it. Being a mover in NY you see plenty of both. If you’ve got artwork in that second category, use the bubble wrap and stretch wrap combo for moving it. You’ll save time and money.
Stretch wrap adds a layer of containment and protection to anything being moved. It’s a good idea not to stretch wrap any people or pets – it turns out they really don’t like it! – and you can’t use stretch wrap in a way that requires it to support weight. Other than that, have a great time: it’s one of the most fun parts of packing for a move, if you ask my opinion.
