7 Tips for Organizing Your Storage Unit

If you are planning a move soon or have valuable items you don’t want in the house, it is time to consider getting a storage unit.  Storage units can be hectic when they’re not properly organized and cause unnecessary stress.  Planning to make sure your storage unit is organized can save you from a series of headaches.  Here are seven simple tips to help organize a storage unit so that you can find what you need fast and with ease:

Tip 1: Label Your Boxes

Place labels on all your boxes and use a permanent marker to label all the items inside.  This will allow you to know exactly what items are in every box and you can locate it within minutes when you come to your storage unit.  Place a special mark on boxes you may need to access at some point during storage and remember to put them in your storage unit last. Be as detailed as possible with the contents.

Tip 2: Put Heavy Items on the Bottom

Larger items and furniture like sofas and tables should be at the bottom or the back of the storage unit. This keeps the fragile and smaller items from being crushed or damaged while they’re being stored.  If you stack boxes, make sure the stack is balanced and the weight is distributed.

Tip 3: Make a List

Make sure that you know everything that is in your storage unit by keeping a complete list.  Make a list prior to packing and another one while you are loading everything into the storage unit to ensure all items are accounted for.

Tip 4: Place Frequently Used Items in The Front

If there are important items that you know you’ll need to access frequently, place them near the front of the storage unit.  This can significantly reduce your frustration and make all your items easy to find.  For example, store seasonal items near the front so you don’t have to go searching through the whole unit.

Tip 5: Shelve or Stack Boxes

To access your items easier, use shelves for your boxes or stack them.  The boxes that you will access most frequently should be the last ones packed inside the storage unit and be near the door or on shelves with labels facing out.  Place larger, heavier boxes down first, and then you can stack lighter ones on top. Try the brick-wall pattern when stacking to eliminate the aggravation of removing all boxes above the one you want removed.

Tip 6: Make the Most of Your Furniture

If you have furniture such as a hutch or entertainment center with built-in shelves and cupboards, make use of those spaces by placing other items inside them.  Just be sure to do this in conjunction with tip #3 and note on your list which items are stored in these pieces of furniture.

Tip 7: Take Photos of Your Storage unit

To complement your list in tip #3, take photos of items that you can’t readily see once your storage unit is full, noting the locations of each photo on your list.
