“I guess it happens to a lot of people,” Ren said. “I woke up one morning and looked out on our balcony. There was snow – so much snow – and this was late March, practically April. I just threw up my hands and said, “I’m done. I can’t do this anymore.”
Moving to California had always been one of Ren’s dreams. “I thought I couldn’t afford to live out there,” he said, “But things got to where I really couldn’t afford to keep living in Dumbo, either – the way I saw it, I might as well be broke in a place that has nice weather.”
Saving Money on Your Cross-Country Move
To keep moving costs under control, Ren downsized strategically. “The bed I had has really never been right for my back, so I figured why move it to California?” Winter clothing was donated to a local charity, and Ren culled his media collection. “It used to be that if you wanted to watch a certain film, you needed to have your own copy. Today everything’s available online.”
Moving boxes turned out to be a big issue. “I know I’m cheap, but there’s a point where it’s worth it to spend money,” Ren said. “All of my friends are telling me I can get boxes from the bodega, or from the liquor store, or from this place or that place – but when I tried it, it turned out I was spending a lot of time and energy just running around trying to get these boxes. People weren’t really all that nice about it, and the boxes I got this way weren’t great. They were all different sizes, and some of them were ripped. I started thinking, “Is my stuff going to make it in these sorry boxes all the way from New York to California?”
Ideally, moving boxes are new, strong cardboard boxes that close securely. Having moving boxes in a consistent size is making the best use of your moving truck space easier; additionally, consistent box size is a factor in load stability. There can be plenty of wild weather on the way between New York and California, and moving trucks do sometimes slide, swerve, and experience troublesome traffic patterns. Your moving boxes serve as your belongings first and best line of defense during the move.
“It turned out that the best place to get quality moving boxes and packing materials was from my moving company,” Ren said, with a laugh. “I suppose that makes sense. They did an inventory, and so when I called looking for help, the customer service associate was able to help me figure out exactly how many moving boxes I would need and had them delivered right to my door. It made life so much simpler – and when I got out here, and it was time to unpack everything, I was thrilled to find that nothing – and I mean nothing! – broke along the way.”
