Do’s and Don’ts for Couples Moving in Together

Whether you’re making major real estate decisions, renewing your lease in a rent-controlled NYC apartment, buying a first home as newlyweds or simply navigating the transition from two apartments to one shared home, moving in with your significant other is a major milestone—not least of which includes the merging and melding of shared and individual possessions. In honor of Valentine’s Day, we’re sharing with you our best tips and advice for what to do (and what not to do) when moving in together.

Do:

Be realistic about the amount of space you are willing to share—and be honest about needing personal space. A studio apartment or quaint bungalow may seem cozy or manageable now, but if one of you snores and the other works late and long hours, you may want to consider finding homes with some extra space.

Don’t:

Make decisions alone, especially at the outset. Try to make sure you’re both available for every open house, apartment tour or meeting with real estate agents. You may think you know everything your partner is looking for but things come out in person that may help avoid major blunders down the road.

Do:

Take a full inventory of all possessions before deciding what to move in. If you both have lived alone for a while, you likely have significant redundancies in your stuff. Choose which coffee maker, blender, and utensils (among other things) you plan to keep and then store, donate or sell the rest before you move. Paying movers to move duplicates of everything is a waste of your time and money.

Don’t:

Forget to compromise. Moving in as a couple means more than just sharing expenses and an address. Everything from bedroom décor to living room throw pillows and area rugs is an expression of the shared personality of the couple. Even if one person is more interested in decorating than the other, the décor needs to reflect the interests of both to make it a comfortable place for the couple to grow their relationship.

Do:

Pay special attention to planning, organization, and details. Moving is stressful but moving in together as a couple adds a whole new layer of pressure and stress. You can alleviate some of the pressure by being especially careful about every aspect of your move. From choosing a professional mover to working with a moving concierge service, you can help ensure less stress by leaning on the pros to do the heavy lifting.

Don’t:

Worry too much! Moving in together is a great experience and a long road, one that you will navigate together and enjoy as you get to know each other as partners. Focus on getting the technical details set and then enjoy your home together!

Wishing you the very best in your new home together!
